From time to time we all feel a little low. There could be all manner of reasons for the dip in our moods, some we can try to prevent, whilst others may be completely out of our hands. But, there are a few simple things we can all do to help ourselves. So, I’ve put together 5 ways to improve your mood. These are all things I do myself so I know they work for me. I hope they go some way to helping you too.
5 Ways to Improve your Mood
No matter how positive and upbeat we try to be, there are lots of things that can bring us down and lower our mood. There’s a huge range of things that can really impact us, but these are a few of the main ones:
- Feeling unwell
- Financial stress
- Relationship worries
- Seasonal disorders
I’m sure that you can relate to at least a couple of these. I know I’ve suffered with all of them at some point in the past. Each one is bound to have an impact on how you’re feeling and sometimes there’s not a lot you can do to prevent these things from happening.
It’s a well-known fact though that we’re less able to deal with difficult situations when we’re feeling low. We need to keep our moods up and try to stay positive so that we can handle problems better.
These 5 ways to improve your mood might go some way to helping you to deal with stressful times.
1. Sleep well
OK, so I know that everybody would LOVE to sleep well. I also know that it’s sometimes not that easy! You climb into bed with the weight of the world on your shoulders, feeling exhausted but sleep just won’t come. It’s incredibly frustrating when that happens, and it makes you feel 1,000 times worse when you’re dealing with other stresses if you haven’t had a decent night’s sleep!
So, what can you do to improve your sleep patterns?
- Establish a bedtime routine – go to bed at the same time every night.
- Don’t take any devices into the bedroom with you.
- Don’t watch TV in bed.
- Read to relax your mind and distract you from the day’s worries.
- Make sure your bedroom is a comfortable temperature.
- Use ear plugs if you’re woken easily.
- Get some blackout curtains to keep the sunlight from waking you too early in the summer months.
2. Eat well
When your mood is low, it’s really easy to grab the junk food. But this will actually make you feel even worse. The short term sugar rush is quickly replaced by the crashing low, and if you’re really unlucky, then you’ll quickly find yourself suffering with a headache too.
Make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. This will help your body to keep you going by filling you up with valuable nutrients. Eating well also helps you to sleep better as you’re less likely to be suffering with indigestion in the night.
3. Drink plenty
In order to boost your mood, your body needs to be hydrated properly. This means drinking plenty of water or sugar free squash in order to maintain healthy levels of hydration.
You should be drinking at least 6 glasses of water every day. Dehydration can make you feel dizzy, weak and headachy, so if your mood is already low, then dehydration is definitely not going to help!
4. A problem shared is a problem halved
Whatever you’re going through, the chances are that somebody else has gone through it too.
Talking to somebody you trust is a great way to ease the burden. No matter how big or small the problem, it really does make a huge difference if you can just open up and talk about it with somebody.
Sometimes, it’s easier to talk to somebody you don’t actually know. For a whole host of reasons, talking to a stranger can actually be a great way to work through your problems. Make sure that you’re talking to somebody who knows what they’re doing though. The Samaritans is a good place to start.
5. Get outside
Take some time to get outside and get some fresh air. A short walk every day does masses for your health and wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be far, but just a quick stroll to the local shop is a great way to boost your mood.
So, if you’re feeling a little low, take some time to implement some of these things, and hopefully you’ll soon start to feel a little less burdened.
